I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. Basic arithmetic skills make story problems easier. Types of story problems need to be practiced, not just thrown in at the end of a chapter without much information on how to do it. I am patient and punctual. I like being with students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned my Degree at BYU-Idaho where I majored in Math and minored in Health. While in college I taught some lower level math classes. I went on to work at a year round school working with troubled teens. I was able to learn many different teaching strategies to work with different personalities.
I have been able to develop a great teacher-student relationship of mutual respect and trust. I like to get to know the students learning style so I can adjust my teaching strategy to better fit them. I think it is important to create a situation where the student can feel successful, which will improve their confidence in learning.

I have been very successful throughout school. I'm a Presidential Scholar, Toyota Scholar, Gordon B. Hinckley Scholar, and a Chicago Tribune Scholar. I've taken a wide variety of courses at the college level and have been on the Dean's List every semester. I'm very qualified to tutor most subjects up to the college level, as well as some college level subjects. I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. Once a student sees how the subject "fits" in their life, their interest level often changes.

I have done private tutoring at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, UT for almost three years teaching Spanish to the senior missionary couples and Mission Presidents and their wives. I have also volunteered to tutor at a number of different elementary schools in both Provo and Colorado tutoring at the kindergarten, 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels.
