I'm a math minor at the University of Montana, and I've been tutoring at the Math Learning Center there since I was a freshman. I have experience tutoring with all of the classes listed, and I learned a lot of them from different institutions so I can help give a new way of thinking about the subject.
I try to teach conversationally and help students get comfortable with the process of doing the problems over just giving the answers. I tend to go with asking questions as a default--I've found it really helps learning, especially with classes like math that are more about understanding the process than regurgitating answers--but during those times we all have when you have no idea where to start, I'm happy to explain it out! My main goal is to help build confidence. Math can suck and it's not everyone's thing, but it often sounds a lot more complicated than it is too. My part is to ... read more

I have worked as a wildlife field technician over the last four years including a position with the Northern Divide Grizzly Bear Project. I have volunteered for the Watershed Education Network, a non-profit organization that educates young students about the importance of water quality and introduces them to stream monitoring science. A Little Bit About Me...

I have made several practical--as well as scholarly--studies of learning styles that inform my teaching style. I am a facilitative teacher, one who listens attentively and watches closely to determine my students' learning style preferences and abilities in order to help my students build new skills upon those strengths already developed. My greatest joy is the look on my students' faces when they come to understand something that has resisted their comprehension before I began working with them.
I was trained and worked as a Master Tutor to pay my way through both my associate's and my bachelor's degrees' schooling, tutoring math subjects from algebra to biometrics and statistics, and English (academic) writing skills. I taught developmental math at a community college and math for elementary school teachers at a four-year teacher's college, both in New York State, for five years. ... read more

I was asked to apply for an undergraduate teaching assistant position at The University of Montana. The following year, I assisted in the laboratory sections of Anatomy and Physiology, teaching basic biology and advanced anatomy and physiology (A&P). I now serve as an instructor, teaching two sections of A&P. In addition, I have served as a student advisor, guiding incoming freshman and assisting them in schedule structure and course loads. I have discovered a love and aptitude for teaching. At times it can frustrate and challenge even the most patient instructors. However, there is little more gratifying than the moments when a student finally “gets it”. Such moments of understanding make the hard work worthwhile.
The professors who most impressed me were extremely challenging. One exceptional professor jumps out at me. Her passion for teaching was inarguable and her ... read more

During my years at Rocky Mountain College, I not only gained my degree in Literature with a minor in writing, but I also began teaching. As a student, I tutored an adorable foreign exchange student for a semester. I also served as a senior editor to the student publication Soliloquy, in which I selected, edited, and arranged writing pieces in the journal. I was also the dorm paper advisor, charging only a box of Chewy Chips Ohoy cookies for my paper editing skills, answering questions as to why you needed a period there instead of the never ending run-on sentence. After graduating, I stayed on at the college as the Activities Director and taught 3 freshman orientation classes. The classes were designed to help new freshman transition from high school or a work experience to college classes.

My teaching style varies for each individual student. To see a struggling student smile when they finally grasp a concept is very rewarding. I make my students think and do the work. The only way to grasp hard business and math concepts is through repetition and patience.
Throughout my life I have tutored many individuals that have crossed my path. As a father and working professional, I have always tried to pass along my knowledge to those that would benefit. A well trained associate is better for all concerned. I currently tutor algebra for 6th grade students.

A Little Bit About Me...

If someone would pay me to be a student, I could continue going to school for my whole life. I love to learn and come from a family of teachers. My award for service learning integrated information from the fields of Education and Sociology to improve learning opportunities for abused children. I have extensive experience writing and editing through professional training (BA in Journalism) and experience (various editing projects). I participated in mentoring projects in my undergrad experience. I co-presented a workshop on Adult Learning Styles at an AmeriCorps conference.
With my years of being around and in an educational environment, I have picked up patterns of repetition and summary to reinforce ideas being conveyed. I, myself, learn best by doing. Through studying adult learning styles, I discovered that studies show utilizing all facets of learning - writing, audio, visual, ... read more

I tend to teach from theory to application whenever possible. Realizing the benefits in industry tends to drive home the potential for actually applying what you learn in some of the more "obscure" sciences.

That experience is enhanced by a foundation in mathematics and advanced sciences from the number four engineering school in the nation. The style of teaching that I use is experience. I believe that people learn best when they work through and actually practice the issues. For example, in mathematics I believe it is very important to practice math problems. Not to memorize the answers but the memorize the formula for working through a problem. When they are working through the problems I try and answer any questions that they may have, so that they develop speed and accuracy, that way when a test comes they are fully equipped with the skills they need to get a good grade in a relatively quick manor.
While attending college I was apart of many different study groups. In such study groups we would teach each other the information we needed to learn. Through this I interacted with many students teaching many things in many different styles. When I was in upper level courses I would assist the underclassmen with their ... read more
