My teaching style is really one of encouragement, love, belief, knowledge, honesty and respect. I believe that children need to know that you are truely concerned for them before they really want to know how much knowledge you can dispense to them. As an elementary student in the 4th grade I had a reading deficiency and was reading on a 1st grade level. It my parents and tutors that gave the encouragement to continue trying and the self-esteem to know that I could do it. They all believed in me and it was through their belief that I began to believe in myself. This lesson has stuck with me throughout all of my education. My style of teaching mathematics, science and Japanese is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. It is only through solving problems (for mathematics and science) and practice (for Japanese) that this knowledge becomes ingrained in a student so that they are confident to move forward.
I began tutoring high school and college students in 1986. I have 6 children of my own who I have raised and taught science and mathematics. I worked 2 years as an adjunct professor at the University of Florida and was a volunteer instructor at Brigham Young University. I speak Japanese fluently and am semi fluent in German.

My teaching-style is rigorous yet kind. My students say that no one has ever criticized their writing and thought so thoroughly and constructively. I'm known for my patience working with students with foreign-language backgrounds and other disabilities such as a lack of attention and focus. I learned from my professors at Swarthmore College (and a few at Penn) how to project a non-B.S. style, since kids tend to intuitively realize when their teacher has no idea what he/she is talking about.
