I have always approached a teaching lesson as a learning opportunity. Learning is a fundamental skill. If you don't have your basic fundamentals, your student will have difficulty advancing. So, I always start with basic fundamentals such as; note taking, study skills, and comprehension! All sciences demand the ability to link concepts together. Ex. cells make up tissues, tissues make up organs, organs make up organ systems,etc.....! By understanding the make-up of cellular structures and relating that to tissue functions the students can fully understand a subject. This proves true with all subjects. The best method I have found for relating mathematical and scientific concepts to students has been with a majority of examples. While explaining theory is necessary for a student to gain the basics of a concept it is only through working problems and exercises that a student truly understands the material. When teaching I would usually explain a section of material as best I could, then work through multiple examples that illustrate the material. This is then supplemented with exercises for the students to work through on their own.
