My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms. I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction.

While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I spent the summer of 2006 working closely with people with disabilities. I perfected my teaching skills through hands-on learning/teaching techniques. I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs.
