I am not young enough to know everything

I agree with the concept that each person learns a bit differently, and even more so that as a tutor, I should try and find the most effective style for my tutee. My academic career also taught me the importance of setting time limits for each action item; and switching tasks to keep the mind sharp.

I believe that by letting the student try to answer the problem by them self is the best way of learning. I will try to guide them down the right path, but even a wrong answer can teach you a lesson. I also believe that practice is the best way to become good at science or math, like a basketball player practice basketball to become better, so must a student.

A tutor is not a replacement for a classroom instructor, but can provide the individual attention that a student needs. Some students learn best from oral instruction. Some learn better by writing the material out. Still others need to be physically involved, "doing" the project. Practice (and homework) are important to ensure that the student has internalized the concepts, not just memorized them.
