I'm Here to Help!!!

I am a twenty eighty year old graduate of the University at Albany where I received my Bachelors in English Lit. in 2011. I have no previous teaching or tutoring experience but that does not mean I lack the knowledge or skill necessary to help one learn and grow. I am an avid reader and aspiring writer and try to put thought to paper every day.
I have often thought about becoming a teacher and have been told by friends, families and previous instructors in my own learning I would make a good one but I feel my personality would be better served in a more laid back and less rigid atmosphere. I am very laid back, amiable and have a strong passion for what I've learned and what I do (the whole aspiring writer thing I mentioned earlier).

I have had a successful career as a medical scientist in hospital, government, and reference laboratories in the northeast and southern U.S., holding bench, supervisory, and leadership positions. I have two college degrees with published articles, and two national certifications, all in the sciences. For the past eight years I have been a substitute teacher and tutor in thirteen urban, suburban, and rural public school systems in Connecticut. I enjoy helping elementary school children improve their reading, writing, and math skills in a one-on-one setting the most. I also like to work with enthusiastic students (any level) who are science-oriented, and enjoy introducing them to scientific methods, experimental data, and microscopy.

My experience as a teacher has nurtured within me a deep respect for children as thinkers, and ultimately "real" people. In my position at Spence's Farm, I was responsible for a group of 5-8 year olds. I enjoyed being with kids, who inspired me to observe and innovate, two talents that I had to perfect in order to develop fun and effective lesson plans and field trips. I also observed that childhood play and learning are interconnected fundamental ways. Excited at this discovery, I searched out other teaching opportunities. I later provided weekend childcare for various children under the age of thirteen, and also began to help out at my temple Sunday School as they learned dance, put on theatrical plays and told stories.
As a tutor, I hope to continue to find fulfillment in facilitating enjoyable learning and in giving students the individual attention that is needed to succeed. I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy kids and helping them to think highly of themselves above all. I do not have any direct teaching experience, however I have done many hours of volunteering at my former church. Kids take to me. I know how to talk to them, without talking down to them.
I am an avid writer of short stories and poetry, as well as song lyrics. I am an excellent public speaker and earned an A in this subject in college. I have been told I have a way with words, and have become the "walking dictionary" for family and friends. Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it! Then I show them how it can be fun. This needs to be balanced with the practical need to get passing grades and complete the course work. My style is marked with a belief in the student and I encourage them and acknowledge their progress.

I graduated from Saint Joseph College with a BS in biology, which allowed me to build a foundation within life sciences and mathematics. I learned critical skills that allowed me to develop excellent grammatical skills through generating numerous lab reports and research papers. I continued my education by obtaining certification in histological science, which allowed me to have hands on experience. It also landed me an internship at Pfizer. During my high school and college years I tutored many students in the subjects of mathematics, chemistry, and biology.
I love to help people in the best way I can so they can achieve their goals. I was taught by my professors that everyone learns in different ways. The difference in learning styles is where I believe that I can help students excel by providing different ways of learn, understanding, and obtaining educational information.
