A Little Bit About Me...

I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. In the past I have done short-term tutoring for algebra/pre-algebra, geometry, high school calculus (calc 1), and algebra II. I have also tutored in English as a second language, specifically for native Spanish speakers.
I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. I really like to work through a lot of examples because without practice it can be difficult to apply.

I have been teaching in various forms for over ten years. I was a teaching assistant for four semesters in graduate school. I mentored and tutored people during my time as a Naval officer. I worked for Kaplan Inc for about a year, teaching almost all of their tests, including SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. I taught mathematics and statistics at Parkland College for three years. I am currently employed as a full-time instructor at a government laboratory...but I'd like to teach more, in the late afternoons, evenings, and weekends!

A Little Bit About Me...

While attending Danville Area Community College from 2003 to 2005, I tutored middle school and high school students through a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This included individual and group tutoring sessions in all subjects. I mostly tutored in mathematics as this is my specialty. After transferring to Eastern Illinois University, I began my pursuit of a teaching certificate in secondary education with my concentration in mathematics. While at EIU, I had many experiences teaching in a classroom setting. I also occasionally tutored high school and college students in both physics and math. I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. After a year of doing so, I went on hiatus to focus on my final two semesters which centered around extensive lab work as well as research writing.

I graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in Economics with a Business Administration minor. I started off as a Finance/Account major but switched after I took some economics courses as electives. With that being the case, most of my business admin credit hours came in accounting and finance. Additionally, I had credit hours in statistics and calculus as I felt that my time would be better spent in classes that would enhance my degree. A Little Bit About Me...

I truly enjoy teaching basic physics and mathematics and have been told I am pretty good at it. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to explain a concept in different ways, as of course, people don’t all learn the same way. There’s nothing more rewarding than finding the right explanation and watching the light bulb come on when a student grasps a concept with which they were struggling. Although I am pretty good at classroom presentation, my favorite interaction is one-on-one or in small groups, when teaching can occur that is tailored to an individual.
