I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.

A Little Bit About Me...

Each person learns at an individual pace. I use the Gardner system of multiple intelligences to facilitate individual learning style. I do not believe something is impossible to learn, or unteachable. Patience is a moral and ethic rule with my personal professional style.
I have worked with different levels of mental health and emotional maturity for several years. I have spent much of my spare time working within the community at youth centers, soup kitchens and veteran administration homes. Although my degree and early experience is in journalism, I have spent 16 years teaching middle school English. During that time I taught English Language Arts, Journalism, and TV Production. I have always nurtured a love for English literature, both in myself and in my students. In addition, my experience as a reporter and freelance writer gives me deeper insight into the artistry of written English.
I believe that learning comes from a good rapport between teacher and student. I like to make students feel at ease, and then progress is achieved in the context of a safe learning environment. In high school and all even through college math had always been my hardest subject. My second year in college I had a math professor that had a different approach to teaching math and for the first time in my life I finally understood math! As a recent UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with majors in journalism, dramatic art, and creative writing, I have extensive experience in arts education, academic outreach, and childcare that help make me an outstanding tutor. I ask a lot of questions to get the students thinking. I believe in teaching young people and the adults I have worked with to think critically fist. Then I work with them on being able to articulate and write their ideas down...subject matter follows naturally if they have the confidence and can just think for themselves not just spit back facts and what others want to hear. I would travel and relocate for a job.
