My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. During high school I worked as a volunteer in St. Petersburg, Florida through All Children’s Hospital. Within the Bedside Buddies Program, I was able to spend over 200 hours working with physically and mentally challenged children to maintain their grades when they were experiencing long staying in the hospital. With this experience under my belt, I pursued my degree in psychology, achieving a BS rather than a BA to exhibit my proficiency for the mathematics and sciences.
