I take a creative approach to learning and cater to each student's unique learning style. Personally, I have seen (and experienced myself) the benefits of students learning underlying principles of math material via hands on, sequential learning processes. It is of the utmost importance that a student understands the separate components of a theory or process in order to comprehend the larger picture. Therefore, I believe rote learning seriously prohibits true understanding for many students. Most students need to build the understanding by performing the work themselves beginning with the basic tenets of that theory or process.
