I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.
I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams

I fit my teaching style to the student's learning style. I try to follow the model of my physics advisor, who has an excellent ability to figure out how a student learns best, then adapt his teaching and explanations accordingly. Students are often closer to understanding than they realize, and a different presentation can make a huge difference. I work to improve weak areas and capitalize on strengths for each student. I keep things relaxed, but focused; and I make sure to work through the material with my students, moving on when they are ready. As we are working, I also help them with note-taking and study skills.

My first teaching experience was as a high school senior where I was given the opportunity to teach a small group of 5th graders as part of the Missouri A+ program. We began with division, quickly moving into linear and nonlinear algebra, before touching on the fundamentals of complex numbers, graph theory and trigonometry, before concluding with a derivation of the quadratic formula and its applications. Some students remember best what they see, some what they hear, but nearly all will best recall material that they see hear say and do something with. My teaching style is one that tries to incorporate seeing, hearing, saying, and doing and getting students to use higher order thinking skills as much as I can. More than just rote memory and recall, I want then to be able to apply acquired knowledge to solve problems or create new ideas based on their previous learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy tutoring. I love watching the students gain confidence as we work through the problems. I believe my attitude and approach to teaching helps the students. I provide enough understanding to the students but still challenge them. The worst thing you can do, is just give the answers. I believe everyone wants to learn and do their best, but it is hard when you do not understand what you are trying to do. I enjoy providing that one on one attention to open their minds and show them they can do it.
