When I entered college I was immediately drawn to tutor my peers as needed. I worked with the single mom's program at IVC and also did job coaching for the City of Long Beach Disabled program. Once I graduated from college I had the opportunity to join the Boys & Girls Clubs, specifically designing educational and technology programs. I enjoyed tutoring about 50 youth a day. As a result some parents requested that I run a special off hours program at their middle school to tutor the ADHD kids. Every child in that program raised their grades 60% over the course of the semester. My approach to teaching begins with having a high expectation for what my students can accomplish. I try to inspire the students In terms of style, I explain the basic concept being taught and then illustrate by way of examples. I combine a bit of lecturing with meaningful interaction. Next, it is the students term to practice what has been taught. I may use a variety of interactive learning games in order to re-enforce the concept being taught. Since my elementary education, I always believed in the importance of the education in one's life. I am a very down to earth person especially when it comes to kids. I always try to lighten up the mood and make learning things interesting and fun. I don't like to dismiss when I see a child having trouble in something. Every person has a different way of learning, I try to cater to each of their needs. I have tutored children in reading last summer. It was one of the most gratifying things I have done. I worked with English as second language children ranging from ages 5 to 13. We used a lesson plan and several activities to help children in achieving their reading level goals.
