Striving to make the student feel comfortable is part of my basic repertoire of teaching strategies. I know that when a student does not succeed in a typical classroom environment it is easy for the student to feel negative about learning. I have a son who was born with neurofibromatosis is accompanied by a learning disability. My son is now 18 and in his last year of High School. He has been in special education courses since 2nd grade once being diagnosed with his learning challenges. He has had an active IEP since that time and I have worked very closedly with him throughout his school years. I have worked with him on every subject, every project, and encouraged him along the way. Due to his learning and physical disabilities, he has very low self esteem and this causes him to rebel during most homework sessions.
