Sharing what I’ve learned about writing has been the most gratifying aspect of my work over all these years. I’ve learned that lecturing or directing is an ineffective, if not counterproductive, method of teaching. Rather, I prefer to help the student reach the same conclusions I have through questioning him or her, first about perceptions and then about what options exist for most clearly and accurately recounting them. Technical aspects such as grammar and punctuation obviously don’t lend themselves to this approach. For these, I use the time-proven red pen, but I also review the markup with the writer, explaining the logic behind the correction.

I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. As a first-year college writing instructor, I became aware of the challenges young writers face, such as generating topics, organization, grammatical issues, and lack of writing confidence. I also realized it was essential for me to vary my pedagogical practices in order to meet the educational needs of all students, ranging from English language learners, to individuals who learn better visually, to those who need more hands-on practice.
