A Little Bit About Me...

While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I spent the summer of 2006 working closely with people with disabilities. I perfected my teaching skills through hands-on learning/teaching techniques.
I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs. A Little Bit About Me...

Children all learn different, which is why I believe in using direct instruction in guiding their learning. Some children are more visual learns, while others may be more auditory. Varying the levels of teaching can allow for each child's needs to be met. I feel that I am able to adapt and change what I need to teach to meet those needs. I also believe scaffolding is a key component in guiding the way a child is able to learn. Along with scaffolding, providing the experiences and opportunities for a child is very important in helping them to reach their full potential. I have recently graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in statistics. A Little Bit About Me...

My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms.
I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction.
