A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated in December 2014 from Iowa State University with a Civil Engineering degree- 3.5 GPA honor student. Before Iowa State I went to the University of Iowa for two years to play basketball. Prior to that I went to Des Moines Christian High School. I am currently working in Des Moines. I have a passion for teaching and have tutoring experience in college. Math and science are my strengths. I can help with about any math and science up to organic chemistry (I was pre-med my first few years of college). A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy a very hands-on approach to teaching where students remain attentive through an energetic and lively approach.
As a Senior in High School I spent a semester in Mettmann, Germany. During my stay I helped my host mom, who was also the head English teacher at the school I attended. I assisted her teach 6th and 7th graders and had the opportunity to head the classes on multiple occasions. She also volunteered to teach English to elderly citizens once a week, which I also filled in for her when she had schedule conflicts. It was a terrific experience which demanded constant adaptation and patience. After finishing up 4 years of German from Ames High School, I began my studies at ISU. I took 2 or 3 German classes every semester. Classes varied from early 1900's literature to German films.

While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I spent the summer of 2006 working closely with people with disabilities. I perfected my teaching skills through hands-on learning/teaching techniques.

I believe that every person is able to learn, if they want to. You can't make someone learn if they have no interest in it. I try to establish a reason for learning with the student. My first child I tutored is a perfect example. This boy was 14 years old. He really enjoyed carpentry. He hated math because he didn't realize that it would help him with what he loved. With the relation of math to his carpentry he was able to come from a low "D" to a low "B". It worked becasue he was able to mentally visualize and apply it to his carpentry. I feel the other key to his success is that we set the realistic goal of one letter grade of improvement. The extra letter was the icing on the cake.

I discovered the value of education when I was a junior in college. I discovered that I wanted to provide students with the educational support that I never received, or I never took advantage of. I started majoring in biology when I was accepted at The Metropolitan State College of Denver. By far, the biggest issue I have found with students with difficulty learning mathematics or the sciences is that there is a lack of motivation to learn, primarily because they do not understand the implications of the knowledge in front of them. Because I have studied physics, mathematics, and completed the pre-medicine curriculum at my university, I am brimming with knowledge of these applications. Once my students have gained an understand of all the cool stuff we can do with knowledge in these avenues, they tend to absorb concepts much more readily. I have also found that my general excitement for the subjects I am teaching rubs off on my pupils.
