My classes are by no means easy, I prepare my students for life, even if that means having students leave my class with “their head hurting” because they had to think too much. I believe my ultimate philosophy has been that learning should hurt a little bit. If the classroom environment is not provocative, controversial, and challenging, I think the teacher has fallen short of his or her task. I am a hands on teacher. Most of the students I have taught, have not reached the analysis state of learning. This has always been my goal, to teach the student to think for his or her self. I do not give extensive lectures, I find that it just befuddles the student. I give facts to learn, and the we apply those facts to a hands on setting for application. I believe this backs up the theoretical book learning, and gives the student confidence in the work he or she does. When they find they've done it, they are amazed--the spark of achievement in their eyes is the most gratifying thing of my career.
