A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.

So I used my business mindset to give my young clients(students) stories that were of interest to them and I made sure that the stories were easy reading and I gradually got the kids to read "at grade level". In my undergraduate program I earned a BA in English and spent time working as a writer and Sports Editor for my college newspaper, worked as an intern at a newspaper, and worked in Public Relations as Communications Manager for a nonprofit organization.

Depending upon the prescribed materials used by the school or tutoring company, I have a student centered approach to teaching. I find which approach motivates an individual student; listening, reading, writing, speaking and ensure that that method is incorporated in to my lessons. I have also found that elementary age children often need to move around if I tutor them at the end of the day. I have a sense of humor, maintain classroom organization and enjoy knowing my students. The last day is a joy for them but always includes moment of nostalgia for me.
Teaching is my second career after twenty years in executive level business. I have taught in elementary, middle and high schools. I have also taught adults with and without formal education. I've taught in the USA, South America and lived in Europe. I have a specialization in ESL but have also taught math to younger students.
