Teaching is a passion of mine. I enjoy teaching students of all ages. I believe that kindness, patience, and understanding are necessary characteristics when teaching students. With the proper motivation and guidance, all students possess the ability to learn. I teach my students with humor and respect. I like to make them feel at ease so they can focus solely on the material with which they need to study and learn. Learning should be a fun and rewarding experience. A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! The goose-bumps I get when I see the 'lightbulb' of recognition turn on in a student's eyes remains my reason for wanting to share the pursuit of knowledge with everyone! I understand and use the proven academic methods for teaching, but am still open for the venue that works.

I have been researching the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets because I plan on using them as a base for the children that I work with at Community Action Duluth through the Circles of Support program. I believe that teaching children academic skills while building assets within them is necessary for a healthy community. I graduated from Bemidji State University with my Early Childhood Elementary degree in 2007 and for the last two years I have been a k-3 Literacy Tutor with the Minnesota Reading Corps. While I was at BSU I was active with the local girl scouts, and in three years I was a Studio 2B counselor, a pixie camp coordinator, a troop leader, and the co-community coordinator. At BSU I had a variety of different labs and practicums. I was a reading and science tutor, I was placed in a head start classroom, and I had four different student teaching experiences: toddler, preschool, kindergarten, and first grade.
