Children and adults learn in different ways. Visual, auditory, kinesthetic are three ways that people can learn, I happen to be mostly kinesthetic. I alter how I teach depending on what my students need and what the resources are. I do use a constructivist teaching style to do this. I do believe that a student rises to the expectations of the instructor. I also believe that the responsibility of learning should be increasingly the students as they take over their own education away from the instructor. I believe students will rise to the level of expectations set for them. I am a bit of a comedian, and I use humor to allay frustration in learning situations. I believe in setting goals and charting a specific path for reaching them, while being flexible enough to alter the path along the way. Praise and positive reinforcement are powerful tools when teaching challenging material, and I use them frequently.
I received a BA in General Business from WSU, and was honored as a Cum Laude graduate. The courses were varied and included a wide array of math application, from supply and demand curves to interest rate calculations. My teaching experience actually extends back to high school where not only did I tutor fellow students in math and chemistry but I also taught swim lessons as my part time job. More recently I tutored students in the chemistry study center at the University of Washington. For the past five years I have had the pleasure of teaching at an international school overseas. I am a recent graduate with straight A’s from Lewis-Clark State College with a major in Biology. I took many classes in math to receive my degree. I tutored students at the University of Montana enrolled in biology and anatomy courses. The students I tutored had significantly better test scores than their previous ones. At LCSC, I assisted one of my professors for her online chemistry courses. I made keys and graded their homework and added notes to help them for future assignments.
