I am a licensed Social worker with tutoring experience in and out of college. I have the most experience in tutoring Algebra and other math. I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. My first two years of teaching were as an intern with the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Public Schools. I taught 8th grade Math full time at a large public middle school. The next year I continued the same position and added on an after school tutoring program for all grade levels. I then took a position teaching 6,7&8 grade Math at an alternative school for students with severe discipline issues. This was a small setting with classes no larger than 12. I was able to spend a lot of time one-on-one with the students and develop personalized lesson plans that fit their needs and learning styles.
I strongly believe in inquiry based learning with the teacher acting as a facilitator or coach. I like to see students heavily engaged in what they are learning, and applying the new skills to daily life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned a BS in Business (CIS) with a cumulative 3.4 GPA and membership in two National Honor Societies. Courses included Chemistry, many Social Studies classes, and calculus-based Chem Physics. Briefly I taught Science and Math at a private high school in Albuquerque and did well, but quit because of a medical problem with my leg. After active duty in the Navy, I earned 8 credit hours in English through the CLEP test, and didn't take Freshman English. I had always made straight 'A's in English, and had excellent grammar. I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. Hands-on learners sometimes need to have creative input and control over the situation, and manipulatives allow the student and me to model the problem in a whole new way.
