Math, Science & Microsoft Excel tutor

I have two technical-college degrees, I worked my way through both of them being a math tutor, and have used math and science in some way in every job I've ever held. As for my "teaching style", as everyone knows, it helps enormously just to have another person to work with, ask questions of, and generally talk things through. And since Im not a professional teacher, Im mostly a working tech--maybe I can help you see the connections between the abstract science & math the way its taught in school, and how that knowledge actually applies in the workplace (and in life.)
On-the-job math is almost always done using Microsoft Excel, so I can show you how to do almost anything on a spreadsheet. A Little Bit About Me...

As an elementary school teacher that focuses on helping diverse populations, I have extensive experience. I have worked with English language learners, and have worked a great deal with students who have learning disabilities. I am a trained consultant with the Wright Group (in math), have TESA training, and currently exclusively teach math to four groups of fifth graders.
My philosophy of education envisions learners that construct meaning by engaging in various and authentic experiences that are provided within and outside of the classroom. In order to prepare them for future educational and vocational endeavors, students will explore a multidisciplinary elementary curriculum that utilizes their various learning styles. This exploration will occur within an educational environment that will be framed on high expectations for behavior as well as academic performance.

After graduating from High School I attended the University of Utah for 1 year. After that year I was drafted into the US Marine Corps and my education was put on hold as I served my country and raised a family. After all of my children graduated from college I returned to finish my studies. This past year I have worked as a substitute teacher and I have taken on a few short term assignments teaching language arts and English as a second language with Albuquerqu Public Schools. I have done much sales and customer service work, as well as teaching. I think listening is key, recognizing the humanity in each person, and relating to it while communicating. In teaching, setting expectations is important... expectations of what the goal is; what they will learn, and then adapting it to the abilities of that individual. Again, as I said, I think listening is key, and empathizing with the individual. Of course you have to set standards, such as homework expected, and tests (as a teacher).

I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. Hands-on learners sometimes need to have creative input and control over the situation, and manipulatives allow the student and me to model the problem in a whole new way.

Teaching is one of my great passions. I thoroughly enjoy overcoming the initial hurdles as the children are hesitant to receive me as a teacher, and to see them open up to me. It's also thrilling to see them blossom as they absorb new information and incorporate it. I'm certainly an advocate of fostering intelligence at a young age.
