I like to ask questions and give suggestions that lead the student to the answer. I never outright give the answer, I do not think that is going to help the student in the long run.

I have two technical-college degrees, I worked my way through both of them being a math tutor, and have used math and science in some way in every job I've ever held. I have done much sales and customer service work, as well as teaching. I think listening is key, recognizing the humanity in each person, and relating to it while communicating. In teaching, setting expectations is important... expectations of what the goal is; what they will learn, and then adapting it to the abilities of that individual. Again, as I said, I think listening is key, and empathizing with the individual. Of course you have to set standards, such as homework expected, and tests (as a teacher).
