For subjects like math, it is simple to develop a step by step method for the students to write down and follow. Once the students have mastered the steps they are motivated to continue with the material because it seems straightforward. It is also important to have the students connect to the material; if they understand how the information is used in every day life then they will become more excited and motivated to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. There I worked with a variety of ages. The last year of college I worked with disadvantaged, at-risk students. I tutored them in reading and math during the school year.
