I have taught at the post-secondary level, and have worked with my disabled daughter. I consider myself to be my own harshest critic, and I believe in working with a student's strengths instead of setting them up for failure.

A Little Bit About Me...

Normally I would have them write something and then we would look at their work together and discuss how we could improve it. Once they see how they write, and then learn what they need to do to improve that, and why, they start to incorporate that writing style. We may write up templates, or dummy copies, so that they have something to refer to the next time they need to write a similar project. It isn't about showing them what they aren't doing, but showing them what they can do and how they can improve that.
I've worked as an addiction tech, juvenile court officer, volunteered at Girls, Inc., an obituary writer, and a freelance writer. I believe the best way of learning is doing. To that end, I seek to help the student understand what is needed in a given situation and then teach the steps to achieving the goal. My teaching/learning environment is free from fear of failure, relaxed, and fun. I hold a wide variety of experience in both education and industry. I earned degrees in Broadcasting and Speech/Communications. With these, I worked in public relations, advertising, community college teaching and broadcasting. I was a teacher of Speech/Communications at McCook Community College in McCook Nebraska where I taught Speech and Broadcasting. I served on the Executive Council of the Nebraska Speech Communications Association six years. Currently I am the owner of a small vegetable and cattle farm.
My preferred teaching style is discussion with leadership. When the student can relate to the information through own experience or peer experience the information is better absorbed.
