My teaching style will depend on the students learning style.
I do not have experience with tutoring, but I have had College English Comp. I and II. My teacher I had was very strict about spelling, grammar, etc. She wrote a grammar book and helped write a couple other books, so she was pretty strict about everything we done. I find it important to ensure that the student understands one concept before moving on to mastering a second concept. I believe that all students can learn; however, the way in which a student learns may be different. Therefore, I use short formative assessments throughout teaching to measure the student's knowledge and understanding. Finally, I ensure that the student can generalize or apply the concept. I believe in personal interaction with students – making them write, making them read – going over every detail, looking at the issues (grammar, punctuation, syntax, coherent structure (logic, unity, transitions, parallelism,)) and then re-writing and re-reading. The key to doing well in English is understanding basic structure and making it become second nature when writing. Through personal interaction, the process can be simplified by working hands on with each sentence and paragraph.
