Getting to know the student and relating thier interests to the material at hand is key to making a connection. I also believe it is critical to remain positive and supportive with students. I try to analyze not only how they perceive math, but I also look at some of their previous work to deduce what mistakes they are making and (more importantly) if they are making the same mistakes over and over.
