Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.

I received my BA degree in Elementary Education from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, and taught elementary grades 2,3, & 5 for 20 years in Las Vegas,Nevada. While teaching there I also obtained a Master's Degree in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Most recently for the past year I have been tutoring two children in the 5th and 6th grades. What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. My goal is to find a way to present the material in such a way that the experience of learning is a journey of meaningful discovery that corresponds to the course content.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my undergraduate years at the University of Oregon, I spent several months in Mexico teaching English to children ranging in age from 6-15. During this time I perfected my Spanish as well, and wrote many papers in both Spanish and English. While pursuing my Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Tulsa, I taught Kumon math classes to children, and fellow Engineering students in electronics. As the middle child in the family, I was very competitive among my siblings. I was very much driven to achieve goals that I set for myself.
