More About This Tutor...

I'm a fifth-teen year old, currently enrolled at Thomas J. Corcoran High School, where I am a sophomore I currently take IB classes and wanted to start tutoring to pass the time and pick up a little extra cash. I'm drug free and have never tasted alcohol. I try to be patient and usually am. I'd prefer to work with children still in elementary or middle school, seeing as I haven't learned everything yet. I know the basic and more to just about everything eighth grade and below. Typically the setting in which the tutoring will take place will be my house in my dining room area and after that the student may watch television until his or her parent or guardian is there to pick them up.

LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.
My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.

I really enjoy engaging the student in discussion of the topic and helping them experience the events in History rather than just remembering dates and locations.
I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. I also have worked for the Walt Disney Company, in the Magic Kingdom. While I was there, I was able to do American History trivia and tours for the Liberty Square area.

I feel that one of my strengths is my creativity towards learning. Not all people learn in the same manner, therefore my teaching style depends on the person I am working with. Some people learn best through rhythm and tones, other through notes and elaborate explanations, samples and examples.I am a very patient person and I do not like to give up but explore the numerous creative manners in which to unlock learning for an individual. I have a very relaxed, easy going personality myself and I am approachable and understanding. However I am honest and firm in my values and beliefs. Learning should have a level of sustainability to it and build upon experiences, cultures, and beliefs.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a former tenured junior high English teacher with a permanent New York State teaching certificate in English 7-12. I have much experience as a private tutor of elementary through high school students in English grammar, expository writing, the study of literature, etc. I have taught GED classes and have extensively trained and worked as a certified tutor for our county’s Literacy Volunteers organization.
My teaching style has evolved over the years to one of guided instruction. My first task is to get to know my student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style and proceed from that platform. I am very patient and encourage a respectful bond between my student and me as the tutor. I believe students perform best when they feel comfortable and accepted in the learning setting. That being said, I require and expect my students to complete assigned tasks and approach the tut ... read more

Because I was a "non-tradional" student, one with my own children, I knew several things from the start: first and foremost, I will always treat students the way I wish my own children are treated by their teachers. In addtion, I have an understanding that not all children, nor adults, learn the same and need to be offered a variety of experiences. My teaching style is one of a facilitator. I want to be the one delivery the lesson, modeling what our learning targets are, and allowing the students to achieve the goals based on the new information given.
I have taught now for 5 years. 6th grade for 2, 5th grade for 2, and tutored as well as substitute taught for several districts in the area. A Little Bit About Me...

Since receiving a Bachelor's in English and Writing, I have developed many diverse skills in addition to those I learned in school. While working as an editor for a publishing company, I was able to hone my ability to write and communicate clearly through the written word. I have also studied music and art from a young age including such subject areas as piano, voice, flute, cello, ceramics, and photography. I have also worked in many environments that required knowledge and use of math skills. I also earned a Master's in education and have worked with children who have disabilities in a recreational environment. In addition to the above credentials, I am recently certified as a fitness trainer.

A Little Bit About Me...

While I do explain procedures as thoroughly as I am able, I attempt to have students flesh out their ideas through their own process. It is my belief that the student must learn to accomplish things independently in order to be successful in the long run; thus I try to act more as a guide rather than "telling" a student how something is done or attained. I would like to believe that every student can find a subject interesting and stimulating if it is approached in a personalized way that nurtures their own aptitudes and skills.
While attending Syracuse University I tutored classmates in both philosophy and English, emphasizing writing and analytical skills while suggesting strategies for breaking down and understanding the difficult language of critical and philosophical texts. Furthermore, I helped students learn and understand effective editing both for content and grammar to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had two practicum rotations thus far. My first rotation was at C. W. Baker High School, in Baldwinsville, NY. This was a 10th grade, level one Global Studies classroom. I assisted with group activites, and helping students connect the information they were currently learning to prior knowledge. My second rotation was at Grant Middle School, in Syracuse, NY. This is a 7th grade (begining US history) classroom. During this time I taught several lessons, created and administered a pre-test, as well as work one-one with several students that had IEP's and lower literacy levels.
My teaching style is a hands-on-approach. I don't want students to just learn and memorize history; but to enjoy it and see how it relates to their own lives. I use visual, verbal, and tactical aids with each of my lessons. I also strive to include everyone culturally and literally (i.e. if they have IEP' ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent graduate of the Rutgers-Newark University Honors College, I hold a B.A. in Biology and plan to continue my education in the future. As a member of the Honors College I was exposed to the most rigorous English Literature and History courses, which enabled me to hone my writing skills. In addition, I have extensive experience in the Biological Sciences. While earning my degree in Biology I held a position as a peer tutor for undergraduate freshmen taking General Biology. I also have a full year of one-on-one and group tutoring experience with preparatory school students, who had learned English as a second language, in various subjects including Biology, English, and History.
