A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching adults as well as high school students. I do not have much training teaching below junior high; however, I am confident that I could successfully teach math or language. Although, I don't mind the traditional classroom setting, I am quite used to instructing on a one-to-one basis. Our GED programs are completely individualized for learners to move at their own pace, and I encourage this type of teaching style when manageable. Many of the students/adults that I have worked with have a learning disability of some sort, but I feel that I learn from each student just as much as they are learning from me. I believe in starting with the basics in all things. Reading starts with Phonics, and writing starts with Spelling and Vocabulary, as well as old-fashioned handwriting skills. An absolute staple of learning, in my opinion, is frequent reading for pleasure – whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, novels or comic books. I am patient and love to teach, even reluctant learners. I graduated from college with certification to teach grades 1-12. Do to the job market at that time, I was unable to get a full time teaching job. I substituted and then tutored for 2 years. I then worked various jobs working with the public. tutoring = 30 years: I have tutored students informally for as many years as I have been teaching. The topics I teach are difficult for many students, and some require out-of-class help. I have taught for nearly 30 years: a couple of years at a junior college in Cleveland, served as a TA in math and astronomy at OSU, then ~25 years at Denison Univ., and 4 years at a high school. Subjects taught: astronomy at Denison, physics at the jr. college, and physics, physical science, and Alg. II in high school. At Denison I ran the observatory and planetarium, and dealt with all ages during public guest nights, summer camps, Elderhostels, and teaching intensive summer workshops for teachers.
I use a Socratic method, gently applied. I try to uncover what the student knows, and get back to the point where he/she has gotten lost. Once that is established we can move forward.

Depending on the student I often start from scratch with analogies, diagrams, online tutorials, and simple practice on scratch paper. Usually students will get it after a few sessions, but there are many students that have to be tutored on a constant basis. I teach that effort is necessary for success. A positive attitude is good, but only if it is an afterthought of repetitive practice and focus. I would not tell a student "you can do it" if I knew they could not. Instead we would work together until they could do it.
While at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh I worked as a tutor in Mathematics and Shop. Much of the time the students did not have an adequate education in high school, so it was necessary to start from scratch. My other duties were to fabricate office equipment and search out tutorials to better explain concepts to struggling students.
