Casual and conversational; focused with opportunities to explore the nuances of the language and its usage
I am a highly-experienced speaker and tutor of German with 4.5 years of tutoring experience. As a teenager, I attended the annual Statewide German Competition in San Antonio, TX, competing in various fields such as sight-reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation. I scored in the 90th percentile on the National Exam for three consecutive years; in 2011, I received the highest score in the state of Texas. In 2010, I was able to travel to Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, for a six-month study abroad program, where I lived with a German family and attended school to achieve an immersive experience. My students show marked improvement in their abilities with German. I am projected to receive my BA in German in May 2016. I specialize in translation, conversation, and grammar.

My comments on tutoring Writing : Writing in English as a second lanuage for Spanish speakers only.

I have been composing creative, casual and professional communications on a daily basis for over 25 years. My primary employment is as the Executive Assitant to the President of a company in the finance industry. I represent her and this company in numerous communications each day. I also have taken several English communication college courses including writing, oral presentation and persuasive speaking.
I feel the environment most conducive to learning is one that is relaxed, positive, patient and fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children and helping them be the best they can be. Through my teaching experiences I have discovered that each child learns different and I feel it is my job as a teacher to recognize the child’s strengths. Once I know the child’s leaning style and strengths, I will build off of that information and present the material in a way that will bring the child success. As a teacher my number one goal is to help each child succeed with the least amount of stress. My best quality is patience and I take pride in that. I feel just as happy as my students when they achieve the success that they strive for. My teaching style has always been driven by what my students need. I will explain a concept different ways to help each child understand to the best of their ability. I became a teacher to help pass on the knowledge children need. I love being a teacher because I trul ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I would describe my teaching style as hands on and according to multiple learning styles. I understand that students learn best when they have the option of working with material objects. I also realize that students all learn in different ways and therefore I try to teach to each student's learning style. If a student doesn't understand it one way, I try to teach it another way so that he/she can learn it.
In 2001, I graduated from IUP with a degree in elementary education. I substitute taught around the South Hills of Pittsburgh for a year, then moved to Virginia, where I taught fifth grade for four years. The first three years were in a public school and the fourth in a private school. I taught all subject areas and skill level abilities.

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, I had the opportunity to work in small work group settings and learned the value of tutoring firsthand. throughout high school, I had the opportunity to tutor younger students in first and second grade. Upon graduation, I was able to return to my old school and teach high school students how to excel in public speaking and forensic debate. These experiences have had a profound impact on my life. During college, I learned the value of writing through my experience as a columnist for the college newspaper and through years of extensive term papers. I would love to have a positive impact on a young student so that they may have the same experiences that I was able to have.
I believe it is important to understand that every child is a different, and a different approach is necessary for them to each achieve their highest potential. I b ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I had been a teacher for 12 years engaging in a multitude of learning styles and methodology. I spent 6 years serving as principal at all levels. I was Director of Education for two years and then served as Superintendent of Schools for two districts for a total of 15 years. During that time I never lost connection with teaching, mentoring students from all levels of education and continued to teach in the classroom at least once a week. I was an adjunct professor for two years at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania. I retired in 2009 to travel and photograph the country, while living in and RV. I miss teaching and have sought a position with your entity hoping to tutor while traveling America.
I believe that every child has the unalienable right to experience some success each and every day of their lives. My approach is hands-on, student centered and nurturing. I believe in l ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching people and believe everyone can learn anything. As a visual learner, I like to show and tell the subject matter. My style is very relaxed and I search for "real world" examples people can connect with. My mother gave me the gift of being a "great story-teller," so I enjoy applying my examples into some sort of memorable story or event. I am passionate about learning and strive to share my enthusiasm with others. Every day life teaches me something new and I consider myself a lifetime learner.
As a young person, I thought I did not need to go to college. It did not take long to realize I was wrong. Over the next 20 years, I raised two children, worked, and attended classes. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA and a degree in Information Systems. As an education advocate, I have mentored school-age children with English, Writing, and computer skills. ... read more

I always remember having a passion for education, for example my favorite game as a child was school where I got to be the teacher. Thus, I thought I had found my niche once I became a certified schoolteacher and secured my first teaching assignment. I was enamored with my students and the learning process. However, my enthusiasm quickly dissipated when the reality of “schooling” was revealed. I no longer felt joy, but heartache at the systemic annihilation of inner-city children. However, one thing inspired me to keep coming to teach, day after day, despite the school’s limited supplies, lack of safety, and irreverence for aesthetics; it was the will and determination of my students. They came to school day after day, excited to just learn and receive reassurance that education is liberating and knowledge is power. It was with these students in mind, along with my own children an ... read more

When a question is asked, I am not going to simply just tell the student the answer. I would want them to think it out and try and figure it out for themselves. I would however guide them in the right direction and even ask them other questions they may know in order for them to figure out the intial problem. I feel that these types of interactions are a more effective way of learning. Also, writing things down helps tremedously because not only are you thinking it, but you're seeing it and reading it as well. I am a very easy person to get along with, and I am also very encouraging. I enjoy helping others whether it's in an academic environment or not.

My goal is to simply to help. Everyone can learn, even in subjects they find difficult. I understand from first-hand experience why people can find the sciences difficult, especially Math and Physics, because I myself have had great difficulty with them in the past. So I know how hard it is, and I know that its possible to succeed despite this. I think the key is for someone to find a method of studying that works for them, and everyone is different. Of course, another difficulty, especially with the harder sciences, is simply understanding the concepts, and its always useful to have someone other then the teacher to try and explain them in another, hopefully simpler, way.
I have always loved learning for its own sake, mostly because of my passion for reading as a child. Though 120 credits are required to graduate with a B.S. in Physics, I graduated with 238 credits, which I filled ... read more
