Learning through culture and language

Recently graduated, I have taken four years of Spanish. I taught Spanish III and Spanish II last year with classes ranging in size from 31 to 25 as well as having taught French I and French II in the same year. I taught myself a variety of languages mainly Romance languages including French, and Portuguese along with many others still working at fluency.
I teach in a style which combines different tactics and methods in order to engage the students in the subject. In example, when teaching foreign language I make it a point to incorporate the culture of the native people and their customs along with music and art.

World History is one of my top subjects! I taught World History during my student teaching to high school sophomores in Lubbock, Texas. I also just finished my MA in Medieval History, after studying many cultures in European history.

I have been studying history for the past five years at a collegiate level, and have taught throughout my experience. I earned a bachelors degree from Texas Tech in history and secondary education. I have also just recently completed the course work for my masters in Medieval History at University College Dublin in Ireland. I have worked with primarily high school students. I am great with all types of learners and can adapt to learning styles.
I enjoy utilizing power point, the internet, and good old fashioned text books. Whatever it takes for the student to understand the materials. I have had classes in adaptation of teaching methods, to meet the needs of students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I take a servant leadership, customer-oriented approach to my responsibilities. I routinely try to answer the following question: What can I do to help students achieve their goals? For research papers, I encouraged students to pursue their own interests, such as a subject related to their major, in order to give them a better opportunity to enjoy the research process as opposed to merely fulfilling an exercise requirement.
From January 2006 through August 2008, I worked part-time as a freshman composition instructor, writing lab tutor, and teaching assistant for the English department at UNT. As an instructor, I taught two classes per long semester and one, intensive summer session. During the fall semesters, I taught Composition I, which introduced students to a variety of writing concepts, such as the personal essay and the visual text. The students wrote five papers, thre ... read more

Educated professional - Alternative tutor

I worked in after school progrmas all through college and generally enjoy helping children study. I am very engaging, patient and relate well to any age child or young adult. I am not a proto-typical, traditional "tutor" in that I never studied education in a pedagogical sense, but I am highly educated and always made high grades in every level of school. I may can help where the traditonal teachers/tutors have been unsuccessful. I have no specialized training related to ADD/ADHD other than I have been diagnosed as such since high school. I learned to thrive in light of it and feel like I have insight into those with the same diagnosis.

I believe in guiding a student towards an answer through experience, rather than telling them the answer. This means going out and doing something to help them better understand the subject or doing research to find out more.
I am a recent graduate from Indiana University who has a passion for art, history, and film. I spent most of my college career teaching at IU Outdoor Adventures, Indiana University's outdoor recreation program. There, I gained the skills to instruct on rock climbing and backpacking. I believe that the teaching style I learned there pertains to teaching any subject. A teacher should guide the student to the answer, rather than giving it to them in an easy answer. I also worked as a Naturecrafts staff member at Camp Barney Medintz in Cleveland, GA. At CBM, I taught kids ages 8 to 16 outdoor skills and guided backpacking trips. Working there taught me how to best ... read more

I have experience tutoring former classmates and some clients. I find that because of class sizes and lack of time, some students are not getting the proper instruction needed to succeed. The way public schools are set up they focus on excelency on state tests, and don't build up on needed stepping stones for the next years levels. I have succesfully tutored in Pre-Cal, Calculous, Algebra, Marine Biology, FAA Private Pilot written exam, Spanish, English, etc.

More About This Tutor...

My wife and I home-schooled our three children from 1993 until 2004. In addition, I was active in Scouts from 1994 until 2007 as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor. These positions are supervisory in nature and involve both formal and informal teaching, mentoring and guiding. This experience also entailed several summer camps. My strengths are in the natural sciences, which formed the bulk of my work at UT, and English composition and grammar, as I gained extensive experience proofreading and writing essays for publication.
I typically employ the Socratic method: asking questions to discover what the student knows (or thinks he knows) and guiding his thinking toward discovering the knowledge himself. Both my three children and my Scouts have declared that they enjoy my teaching because it engages their interest and because it is frequently humorous ( ... read more

My techniques will be customized to the subject and student population. One of the techniques: I will use exercises and team involvement as additional tools for re-enforcement and opportunity of exchange, so that team spirit and creative opportunities can be encouraged and explored. Students will notice how genuine my interest in education is, as I am an avid learner myself. I will also create an environment of comfort, exchanges, and suggestions. Where the subject materials and school policies allow, I may introduce additional techniques and suggestions.
I have received rigorous instruction as to punctuation, grammar, syntax, and composition rules since my years of mandatory education. The knowledge and application of the same have expanded thanks to the years spent in college and at the university, where I have also had to use the notions in order to effectively communicat ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have experience both tutoring degree level students in Geophysics and in mentoring junior programmers in programming C and C++. My science knowledge is second to none, and I am an extremely enthusiastic teacher. At school my strong math lead me to win the physics prize, and I continued with my interest in quantitative science through to my doctorate. Recently I have been developing my own software application, which uses both vector and matrix math in its design.
My teaching style has been to enthuse my students. I find the physical and mathematical models of the world to be fascinating, and try and show how exciting these models are to my listeners. Passing on that knowledge is incredibly rewarding, and I believe that I can present any scientific principal in an interesting way.
