A Little Bit About Me...

I have a bachelors and masters degree in music. I majored in vocal performance but am also a proficient pianist and have taught music theory and written a book of sight singing exercises for young singers. I taught voice and piano at several music schools in the Chicago area for more than 20 years. I believe each student possesses a unique talent and learning style. I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. In math, I like to assign the numbers and equations to subjects the learner likes, such as pizza, sports or music, for example. I also find it is beneficial to make references to the different careers one might use the knowledge learned in the child's classes.
