As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, soccer and baseball throughout my high school career. Through volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, I was turned out to tutoring students in Algebra and Trigonometry. I spent my Junior and Senior year tutoring students in these areas of mathematics.
I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. I like working with children of all ages. I believe that children of all ages and cultural backgrounds can learn if given a proper chance. I even managed to teach children in South Korea, when I didn't speak Korean at all and my students had limited English skills. I taught them through games and use of our workbooks and student books. I believe in making learning a fun experience with lots of games and an easy going manner. If the kid is bored or unhappy, it is going to make it much harder for the child to learn. I try to also reach my students at the level where they are at. If a student is at a lower level of understanding, I will start with them there and slowly challenge and build them to a higher level.

I am a huge supporter of the idea that anyone can learn anything that they desire. With that being said, it seems that there should be no problem with students learning mathematics; but there is. Many children have no desire to learn mathematics because they see no relevance for it in their daily lives. I very much enjoy working with children and when I tutor, I enjoy making math more fun and relevant for them. I worked as an assistant teacher for the Spanish department where I conducted speaking drills to improve the proficiency of Spanish for elementary level students. Since childhood, my hunger for knowledge has driven me to study and learn about almost as much as I possibly could. My high estimation of learning has often led me to help others to learn whenever I can. Always drawn to math and science, I pursued chemistry in college and received my B.S. from North Carolina State University in Chemistry in 2002.
