As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, soccer and baseball throughout my high school career. Through volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, I was turned out to tutoring students in Algebra and Trigonometry. I spent my Junior and Senior year tutoring students in these areas of mathematics.
I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. Subsequently, that child starts getting left behind little by little until they feel completely lo ... read more

My teaching style varies greatly depending on the needs of the student; however, I always try to meet the student first and then decide which approach will be the most effective. My philosophy of teaching revolves around the theory that a tutor or teacher's primary role is to support the student so that each problem can be solved by the student. It is also important to me to apply the subject at hand to the life of the student so that concepts hold meaning in an individuals life. I am patient and capable of working with students from all walks of life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like working with children of all ages. I believe that children of all ages and cultural backgrounds can learn if given a proper chance. I even managed to teach children in South Korea, when I didn't speak Korean at all and my students had limited English skills. I taught them through games and use of our workbooks and student books. I believe in making learning a fun experience with lots of games and an easy going manner. If the kid is bored or unhappy, it is going to make it much harder for the child to learn. I try to also reach my students at the level where they are at. If a student is at a lower level of understanding, I will start with them there and slowly challenge and build them to a higher level.
I graduated college in 1985 and then pursued many different jobs over the last 25 years. My degree in History/Political Science allowed me to be something of a jack-of ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a huge supporter of the idea that anyone can learn anything that they desire. With that being said, it seems that there should be no problem with students learning mathematics; but there is. Many children have no desire to learn mathematics because they see no relevance for it in their daily lives. I very much enjoy working with children and when I tutor, I enjoy making math more fun and relevant for them. I have had much success doing so, for I have a strong ability to put understanding in students' minds, where understanding did not previously exist. I believe that good education can make a world of difference in children's lives.
As the son of two life-long public educators, the importance of a quality education has always a major theme in my life. Upon entering college I choose mathematics as a major due to the proficiency I have always had in the subject. During my ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate in one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, I received an education that enhanced my skills as a writer, as a leader, and as a thinker. I worked as an assistant teacher for the Spanish department where I conducted speaking drills to improve the proficiency of Spanish for elementary level students. I also frequently led class discussions to garner confidence in speaking Spanish. During my senior year at Davidson College, I researched and wrote a thirty-five page thesis regarding the portrayal of women in two Latin American dictatorship novels. I currently work in the mental health field providing primary care and guidance to youths. I enjoy sharing with them the knowledge I have gained throughout my life.

I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education. Afterward, I became an instructor at Richmond Community College, teaching basic reading and math to adults with learning disabilities as well as a course on PC literacy & business training. In addition to classroom instruction, I've had one-on-one experience tutoring university students in English and Learning Skills.
I strongly believe that the success of education depends on how well it targets a student's learning style and values. Everyone can learn, but individual attention is a vital part of that. We don't all learn the same way or at the same speed, and these differences should be addressed in a positive and creative way to both convey the subject material and strengthen a student's ability to learn in the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since childhood, my hunger for knowledge has driven me to study and learn about almost as much as I possibly could. My high estimation of learning has often led me to help others to learn whenever I can. Always drawn to math and science, I pursued chemistry in college and received my B.S. from North Carolina State University in Chemistry in 2002. In grade school and high-school I was always looked to by my fellow students for help and explanation of many topics. This continued throughout college where I gained a job tutoring at another school and also worked at the study labs of NCSU. Science and math are my passions, but I can help equally with humanities.
