Most of my adult life has been dedicated to helping people strive for and achieve personal and academic success. I have worked in the academic field for approximately 8 years; tutoring at a community college level for 4 years and scoring MEAP tests for 4 years. In addition, I have provided on the job training for individuals needing extra help. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been at Pennfield High School for almost 6 months now and I have learned how to incorporate the new standards into the curriculum. I am currently teaching part time in the Mathematics department, teaching the subjects of Geometry and Algebra. I also have spent 5 years working for the Carman Ainsworth School District as an At-Risk tutor. At Hope College I received a liberal arts education. So even though I have a degree in music theatre, I am also well-educated in other fields. For instance I wasn't required to take Calculus in college, however, I took this challenging course and I passed the class with an A. I have also worked at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre as a teacher’s assistant and camp assistant the past three summers. These camps work with kids from ages 9-13. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink,” but if it won’t drink, try putting salt in its oats. Everyone can learn, but to do any significant amount of learning they need to choose to do so. As an educator I can work with students to try and make the material such that they desire to learn about it. I find this easiest to do in a small group tutoring session, because you can see how the students are thinking and can cater towards how they learn best. In a large group it is a little harder to personalize a lesson or a project, but to a degree the class can be read and its particular struggles addressed. Learning requires work, and good teachers can motivate students to want to work for their education, and make that work manageable for them.

In groups, I like to have many examples and participation from the audience. As a manager and mentor, I also prefer to teach a concept and return to it when the student has an opportunity to use it in their work.
