I'll Teach your Student to Teach Him or Herself

I hate lecturing! I do! This is why my tutoring style is very interactive. I don't like talking AT a person, I prefer to have a conversation. My goal as a tutor is to make subjects interesting, and also to make sure they stick- so you can do well on exams. I also teach study skills in every session, so ideally you won't have to rely on me forever. I try to give students tools that they can use to teach them how to teach themselves- something they'll have to do if they're considering college.
I have worked as a tutor for 10 years in all subjects, especially focusing on ESL learners. Recently, I have worked in an ESL school (FLS International) with university age students seeking to matriculate into American Universities. Before that, I worked in South Korea teaching English. While employed at these schools, I also work part-time as a tutor- mostly for middle and high school ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style tends to be structured in the beginning as I get to know each students strengths and weaknesses and then adapts to each persons needs. I believe that everyone has their own learning style and try to present the material in a manner that encompasses auditory instruction, visual aids, as well as, hands on experience. The benefit of science as a subject matter is that what we know science has been found through hands on experiments. By allowing people to do experiments they will not only remember the material better and have a sense of accomplishment but they will also become scientists without realizing it.
Through my education I have learned the importance of inspiring others to take an interest in science. My time at these universities has also enabled me to not only learn the material taught in them but also how to apply that knowledge to situations that were ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I rely on motivational strategies to encourage positive student behaviors by being positive myself and through the following strategies. When possible I allow student choice for what the student wants to work on. A student can finish an assignment in what order makes sense to him as long as he finishes. Or he can break up how much of each assignment he wants to do. I also use flexibility in my teaching methods. I have experience working with student who do not tend to learn very well from traditional teaching methods of mostly verbal or written directions. I teach by breaking up the steps of what is expected and by using manipulatives, small white boards, or graphic organizers.
I hold two part-time jobs in the area of education right now. I am a resource teacher in a middle school where I help special education students and their peers in the general education classrooms to complet ... read more

As a tutor in college, our philosophy was to show the students how to learn the subject matter by incorporating memorization games and problem solving techniques for the classes that they were having difficulty with. I believe that communication is key to the student’s success. I would discuss with the student what they are having difficulty with and then develop tutoring sessions around those needs. I will adapt my sessions to reflect the changes in the student’s requirements.

As a graduate, I've been very blessed to have received a degree in Business Communication. In college I learned how to become a better educator, and communicate with them on the highest level. Although, I tutor in all of the academic areas, I also enjoy helping my student appreciate the art of becoming a good writer, and thinkers. My students are also encouraged to read for relaxation, and entertainment. Making the education process fun is also an asset. I am a recent retiree with 33 years of teaching in both private and public institutions. I have had the pleasure of working on four different continents, primarily as a math and French instructor. Among my various accomplishments, I would include my year in France as a Fulbright exchange participant. After teaching French for my first dozen years, I then acquired a supplementary credential in mathematics, a subject area in greater demand. The majority of my career has been devoted to students of middle school age.
Having taught in Australia, France, Japan and the United States, I have gained a unique understanding of different school systems and teaching methodologies. I particularly enjoyed the smaller private school settings with motivated learners. All the same, I believe that my years in the public sector served to improve my organizational and management skills. I am kno ... read more

I have always had a natural curiosity for learning Mathematics and a desire to teach others. I remember being a student in Elementary School struggling to understand a particular concept and then imagining myself explaining this concept to others once I achieved understanding. Mathematics has always been challenging for me but noticed that as long as I was persistent I always acquired knowledge of the material. I was exposed to many different math instructors and many of them motivated me to learn mathematics and inspired me to want to teach. I am very patient when I explain concepts to others and enjoy coming up with different ways of explaining these concepts.
I tutored at the Hartnell College Math Lab in topics ranging from Pre-Algebra to Calculus. I also tutored/mentored recent high school graduates and motivated them to pursue careers in math and science. I tutored Algebra at ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love helping a student come to a mathematical conclusion on his/her own. My 7th graders discovered the distributive prop through an investigation about theater seats. I also remember showing my Alg2 students why borrowing works using $1, $10, and $100 bills and trading with the bank. They were so excited to finally understand subtraction. What a thrill for me! However, when a frustrated Junior was having trouble calculating determinants correctly, it simply didn’t make sense to start at the beginning and help her discover how determinants work. When tutoring, I try to invest time in helping students fully understand concepts when it makes sense to. But I do keep in mind that traditional methods are sometimes the better choice.
Throughout high school and college, I belonged to several tutoring organizations. I took multiple extra classes on education and tutoring techn ... read more
