I graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay with a degree in Elementary Education. Starting in high school I have been working with children in one way or another. I was a mentor to elementary students while in high school, where I helped with their homework as well as their language skills. While in college I tutored at an area middle school in all subjects that the students needed help with. During my student teaching, I spent the summer in Thailand teaching. While I was there, I was able to expand my teaching experience and learn different teaching techniques.
I believe that all students are capable of learning but it just takes finding the right teaching method and approach that works for them. All students learn differently, so naturally we can’t teach the same way to every student. All students are able to reach their potential if they are given the right tool ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

From my tutoring experiences last year, my teaching style would best be described as very proactive. Many of the students were extremely frustrated by the concepts that they did not understand. This created an apathetic attitude towards the subject. Due to the lack of interest that I observed, I decided to go through problem by problem with the students. I talked them through each problem, and asked the students questions, but required them to calculate the answer. As we practiced and practiced, the students began to use the techniques that I taught them to calculate the answers on their own.

I believe establishing a solid personal report of respect with a student, and finding and focusing on positive characteristics, establishes a good foundation of trust and insentive for achievement for all parties involved. My good would be to provide the skills that accomplish this focus by reviewing the current status, contacting the subject teacher with proper permissions, and in-put from what the student is experiencing and how he/she feels about the educational matter. With this information a plan would be developed with specific study skills and review and subject goals. My goal would be to show the student that the choices he/she makes will provide the results that he/she desires from his education.

I believe that applications to everyday life should be stressed if a tutor/teacher is to pique the interest of their student(s). Rather than stressing rote memorization, I believe it is more important to relate overall concepts in a "partnering" style. It is important to remember that one of the cornerstones of teaching is making the subject matter interesting and relevant to the student's experiences. I believe it is also important to focus on a student's strengths rather than their weaknesses. As in many areas of life, teaching also requires patience. From my experience, children benefit greatly from an easy-going approach where they are regarded as equals and treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

I enjoy hands-on teaching and one-on-one interaction with students. Good writing can simplify the thought process, and leads to students becoming better thinkers and communicators. I am easy-going and patient, but I take language and writing very seriously. There is no excuse for poor or careless writing, and I believe that an easily-taught, simple approach, can unlock the potential of any writer.
I achieved an English degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where my senior thesis was selected as a finalist for the UW Creative Writing prize. I am passionate about the English language, but I think that writing is becoming a lost art. Quality writers are quality communicators. As writing in general falls into disrepair, those who can write clearly and read critically will have an edge in every institution they enter--from the University, all the way to the workplace.

It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their full potential by providing a learning environment that is positive, safe, patient, and comfortable. I will use a variety of activities and teaching techniques, and students will apply a diverse selection of learning strategies to determine his/her own best way of learning. Creating meaningful, personalized, and relevant lessons is essential to learning. As a summa cum laude graduate with a BS in Chemistry I worked for over 25 years in the printing industry. One of my responsibilities was to explain to the pressmen the chemistry and physics of the printing process so that they could be better printers. This led me to an interest in relating science to the everyday world. I also have a passion for understanding how we know what the scientists tell us. Three years ago I earned my Wisconsin teaching license for Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Life Science) and Broadfield (general, intro) Science. I taught physics and physical science for two years.
