A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri in 1993. Since graduation, I have acquired 15 years of experience through classoom teaching, tutoring and educational coaching. Most of my classroom experience was spent teaching 5th grade. I tutored elementary students for 12 years, and was recently trained as a Reading Coach. My certifications are in the areas of Elementary Education 1-8, Reading 4-8, and Social Studies 4-8. My experiences as the oldest of seven children instilled in me the desire to educate others, so I obtained my BS degree in Biology and Secondary Education. I taught 7th and 8th grade sciences for five years before staying home to be a full time mother and substitute teaching on the high school level for 3 more years. I operated a small daycare during my children's growing years before returning to work fulltime in the business world. My style tends to range based on who I am trying to teach, and I suppose is most accurately labeled as adaptive. I understand that different people learn things in different ways, and so I try to accommodate that with my teaching. For instance if I found that a student learns better visually then I would attempt to use visual cues and examples in lesson plans to make the material as easy to understand as possible. I also believe in keeping a very loose and pleasant atmosphere, and making sure that everyone feels comfortable and safe, which I believe also assists in the learning process.

I believe in life long learning and I encourage children to apply themselves to do their very best.I also encourage children to determine what their best learning style is and to apply their learning style to fit their specific needs. For example some children require a more sequential repetitive approach to learning. I took education certification courses and passed the state exam for the State of Florida for middle school and high school English.
