A Little Bit About Me...

Almost all students get excited about learning when it is presented in a manner that fits their learning style and is appropriate for their ability/level. Assessment of both is mandatory before you can begin effective and meaningful instruction. Once these assessments are completed, learning objectives should be identified and consistently evaluated. Spiraling curriculum is a strategy that I frequently use with students during tutoring session. It allows a learner to activate their prior knowledge and then build upon it. It immediately allows a sense of accomplishment and confidence. I also utilize several medium in order to ensure my student remains engaged in the learning process.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that the most important step to being an effective teacher is to make the material relevant. If the student does not see a relevant reason to learn the material, the learning curve will be much steeper. Then, I work hard to be sure the student understands my commitment to partner with him/her in the learning process, and that process is a two-way street. And, once I've determined the method of learning that works best for a student, I design the material to accommodate that method. Once these goals are met, success is assured.
My experiences as the oldest of seven children instilled in me the desire to educate others, so I obtained my BS degree in Biology and Secondary Education. I taught 7th and 8th grade sciences for five years before staying home to be a full time mother and substitute teaching on the high school level for 3 more years. I operated a small daycare du ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. Most recently I underwent PADI Divemaster training where I had real world experience teaching and assisting PADI Open Water students with classroom, confined water, and open water training.
My style tends to range based on who I am trying to teach, and I suppose is most accurately labeled as adaptive. I understand that different people learn things in different ways, and so I try to accommodate that with my teaching. Fo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am able to relate to students using their learning style and references that connect them to the material for better success. I am patient and use my sense of humor to figure out how a student learns to get the best results. I do not believe that one method works for everybody. I have a lot of experience with students with learning challenges. I love it when a student says "Wow." I like to support and reward their path to understanding. It's best when you see that they are proud of themselves and they did it!
