A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses for over 20 years. I have a PhD in Business Administration with an emphasis in business statistics and operations management. I also have an MBA and an ME and BS in Mechanical Engineering. I have tutored students in all topics related to quantitative analysis and management.
Learning is the most natural thing for humans to do. We all come into this world with the desire and capacity to learn. We learn through exploration, questioning and discovery. A teacher’s role is to guide students in a process of discovery about the world and about themselves. I emphasize mastery, not “covering the material”. Just going through the book does not make an education. Mastering new skills, relevant to making better decisions in life, makes an education.

I believe above all that patience is key in teaching people of all ages. If the teacher's listening and communication skills are focused on the individual(s) being taught, the learner will let the teacher know when they are grasping and/or absorbing new material as well as when they(the student) reach their capacity. I believe that in learning it's important to pace one's self, allow the mind time to digest new material, and in finding areas of learning that spark passion. Although I think periodic breaks are important, I also believe in advancing somewhat quickly(according to the students' abilities) and in using real-time examples and experience to facilitate and solidify learning. I think all children are driven to learn, and if directed with a little help, everyone can learn how science changes peoples lives. I feel more like a coach and less like a lecturer. If you can make connections between things they know, and the things you are trying to teach them, they will have something to "hang" that new knowledge on!
I have been a classroom teacher for the last 18 years. I have taught in both Public Junior High and High Schools, as well as Private School. I love teaching science, and love to make the class exciting. It really gets students going when you use current events to teach and when kids debate issues, it is a great learning opportunity!
