A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy engaging the student in discussion of the topic and helping them experience the events in History rather than just remembering dates and locations.
I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : Not prolific on the Histories, but very acquainted with Shakespeare's style of writing. I collect books on Shakespeare and have visited his house and gravesite.

LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.
My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.

I would describe my teaching style as ecclectic. Students learn in different ways which enables me to employ all kinds of methods to tap into any particular learning style. All children are capable of learning. I believe that it is a developmental process. I also believe it is a scaffolding process in which we must build upon the skills that have been taught previously. If a student missed a skill, it is difficult to build upon it. Sometimes we must go back and re-teach that skill. Unfortunately that doesn't happen enough in our education system because there is not enough time or teachers for that to happen. But, if we can find where the student missed or misunderstood a skill and help them to achieve that skill, all the other skills we build upon then will come at a much easier rate for the student! The ultimate goal for me or any other teacher is to help the student to find success.
