I've always been drawn to the creativity and knowledge needed to use writing in very powerful and effective ways. I earned my bachelor's degree, taking classes that focused on writing for both stage and screen as well as a multitude of writing and reading comprehension classes in a wide range of subjects both academic and creative: theatre, english, literature, poly-sci, astronomy, anthropology, journalism, etc. While my education might suggest I'm only a playwright or poet, my extensive training has been extremely academic as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment. I tend to push students to work hard and challenge them to think about the process instead of just giving answers.

When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. Each person has a unique way of learning, and if a teacher takes the time to understand it, then the student's true potential can be reached.
