I have a vety high IQ, but am also very accessible.

I engage the student with questions and illustrations. I am big on gentle correction and encouragement. I know the difference between Latinized English and real English, and I share this with my students. I know grammar is something one can't prescribe, just describe.
I have tutored off and on since high school, and have been a substitute teacher for all grades for the last six years. I excel at spelling and grammar, and had a classical education in literature, Latin and Greek. Because of this classical education, I have been able to teach in-depth,and to share the etymology of many English words with students and teachers alike. I graduated from college one year early, having tested out of all my general studies, which freed me to take independent studies classes, such as in Chaucer and Middle English.

I am working on a master's degree in communication.

1) Give the person you are turtoring an opportunity to tell you where they are having a problem. 2) While working through problems monitor the person you are tutoring to see if there are other problems. 3) Suggest changes. Never force them. There isn't one correct way. Make a suggestion on how to improve and explain why you are making the suggestion. 4) Do multiple versions of a similar problem. The first time I will complete the problem, explaining each step. The next time the person I am tutoring will guide me through the problem, telling me what to do next. Then the person being tutored will do the problem while I observe. 5)Let them make mistakes. Explain why it is a mistake and show them how to detect it in the future.

Once I know what learning style my student is,I manipulate my instruction according to their different learning styles whether they be visual, audio, etc. I am a firm believer that every child can learn, as long as they have the support they need. I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly to improve with each lesson. Each person learns a little differently, and I like to learn the student’s strengths and weaknesses and work from there. I support hands-on learning. There is only so much a person can talk about writing. The best way to learn writing is to write. The best way to improve reading comprehension is to read. Reading unlocks vocabulary.
