Progressing through graduate school and working as a undergraduate student demonstrator allowed me to define learning as a personal process of growth. Being able to ask questions and actually attempt to answer those questions was extremely motivating. Involving and motivating students presents its challenges, but my goal of individualizing learning creates an open and comfortable environment where students can feel free to ask questions, make mistakes, and challenge themselves. I my experience in learning and teaching anatomy, which revolves around learning concepts as well as brute memorization, each student, has learned in his or her own unique way. When tutoring a child or young adult, my goal is to conduct the session in a manner that is student-active. This strategy includes posing leading questions so that the student has the chance to discover the answers themselves and to take credit for their own learning. For example, when presented with work for a problem, I would ask why they chose a certain answer, and follow by asking what their approach was in determining their selection.
