My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Trained in the Wired for Reading curriculum

I have taught in the Mukilteo/Everett area for 5 years. I have worked as a special education teacher for students who spend most of their time in a general education classroom. My experience and background focuses on math, reading, writing/spelling, social/emotional, and behavior skills. During my years as a teacher I have worked to help develop and implement IEP (Individual Education Plans)
My teaching style is very student driven. I take students interest in account when helping them. I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. I have work with special education student, as well as advance placement student. I have only noticed one difference with each group and that is the pace that the classroom goes in. Although I enjoy working with small groups or one on one with student I believe that I am able to work with more then ten students at a time. I really try to let the kids explain to me how they interoperate the dictation first and then help them a long. I let all the students do as much as they can on their own, I believe is the best way to assists a child which I have done volunteering at the Land L Learning center, I worked with young age group going into first and six grade to help them get up to grade level in reading. As a regular classroom teacher, I felt hampered due to class size. I was never satisfied connecting with just a few students. Every student was important to me. I realized that the only way for me to really reach students was by reducing the teacher-student ratio. As a tutor, I found that teaching smaller groups of students or one-on-one was for me. Using this style, I feel strongly that students learn more, particularly at home. Students are much more comfortable at home which creates an excellent environment for learning.
