A Little Bit About Me...

After earning my BA and PhD in English, I spent many years in industry as an engineer, quality manager, project manager, and technical writer. I have taught a wide range of subjects in college classrooms, from astronomy to information literacy and composition to professional writing. I am currently on the faculty at two colleges here in Maine and I serve as an editor for several academic and industry publications.
I love to work with students one-on-one from topic selection to final editing. Making the right decisions early in the writing process is critical to the paper’s success, and I have many classroom-tested tools and techniques to help students make the right decisions. My goal is leave each student with the skills they need to succeed in writing –not just a particular paper but any writing assignment they may face.

I graduated from Wheelock College with a double major in Human Development and Elementary Education. Working with children has always been an interest of mine and something I enjoy doing. I have taught at-risk youth (ages 16-25) at Northlands Job Corps in Vermont. The course I taught was to prepare students for careers in Business. I have also taught Business at Middlebury Union High School in Vermont. I have 14 years of Corporate Training at L.L. Bean, ICT Corporation, and The Killington Travel Service. While in college I earned a GPA of 3.239. I received an associates in Business Administration, with a major in Accounting. I also distinguished myself by being on the dean's list for four consecutive semesters. I was also a peer tutor, working for the college. In the workplace I wound up being the first person in the history of the company (Biddeford Textile Corporation) to hold two management positions at the same time. I trained and supervised many fellow employees in operation of computer hardware and software.
I am patient and easy going. I believe that a person has to learn at a pace that is comfortable for them, and frankly sometimes a classroom setting does not meet their individual needs. Everyone can learn, and be successful once they know what works for them.

When I teach writing, I emphasize -- and ensure that the students practice -- rewriting. Not even professional writers get it right the first time. I also encourage students to enrich their writing by reading as often as possible. Young people who take writing seriously are preparing for a successful college career. Post-secondary students who learn to write effectively are more employable than those who view writing as a technical obstacle. One of the most common complaints I hear about college graduates in the workplace is that they cannot write clearly and get to the point. I view writing as an extension of a conversation that I hold with all students. We talk, then we write.
