I have excelled in mathematics going all the way back to elementary school. Studied general mathematics in college. Have tutored at least 20 students on a variety of subjects in math, outside of school involvement. Worked in the math tutor lab at CSU during enrollment. I have tutored students in middle school and below on general subjects also (i.e science, social studies, english, etc).
I am a huge advocate of learning 'why' something happens vs 'how' it happens. In mathematics, anyone can learn a formula, an expression, or an equation if they look at it enough times, but they would not know how to apply it in real life situations. However, if a students learns the application of the formula and how it works, bigger chances they will remember it or can derive it when recalling the information. Learning the 'why' WILL lead to learning the 'how'

During college, I swam varsity, an experience that taught me the patience and time management required to balance a rigorous academic schedule with the physical strain of a full-time sport. Later, I found that my personality and ability to work well with others was more helpful out of the water. During my 4th year, I coached the club swim team, and then moved up to assistant coaching the varsity team during my 5th year. I had excelled in calculus during my freshman year of college, and I was recommended by my teachers to become a supplemental instruction (SI) tutor. I tutored students in calculus for the remaining 3 years of my undergraduate studies with SI. I was supported through a teaching assistantship (TA) during my graduate studies where I taught introductory geology lab. TAs were given a general guideline of what to teach, but not necessarily materials to use. I developed course and testing materials that I and other incoming TAs used as well.
