I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. With a BA in Liberal studies my excellent writing skills complimented the thesis I wrote as a Masters of Science in Education student, and I grew as a teacher of reading when I researched strategies that would increase the academic success of a struggling first grade student learning to read. I have experience as a reading tutor for one year in a public elementary school, 16 years as a tutor, four years as a K-12 teacher in private and public schools. While earning my secondary English credential I taught theater arts and English at the high school level and later completed student teaching as a high school special education teacher.
