A Little Bit About Me...

Being in software development for 25 years was a worthwhile journey and fulfilling my objectives in that capacity freed me to direct my energies into the areas of supplemental education and academic coaching in the spring of 2006. My recent activities have onsistently focused on preparing the next generation for success. In this regard I have been a math and reading tutor, academic coach, and created and conducted a workshop called “Math’s Past” for Teck Trek, an AAUW sponsored summer camp for girls.
The following are two of my favorite experiences with math tutoring. One high school sophomore was making a D in geometry and needed help studying for her first semester final exam. After I worked with her for only three hours she missed making a B by one percentage point and never made less than a B on any subsequent quizzes or tests under my tutelage. Another middle school g ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I've found that I really enjoy teaching students, especially those who are struggling, because of the satisfaction that comes with seeing the light come on. I've had many students explain to me that my class is the first one that they've done well and actually understand the concepts. I've taught Project Management for the University of Phoenix in the past, but I especially enjoy teaching math at Pima College... Statistics and the various levels of Algebra.
On the survey sheets that I've seen, I'm often praised for being very patient with students and very respectful of the students, no matter what their level of understanding. I typically spend very little time in verbal explanation, but a lot of time if running through examples with students so they can see the patterns for themselves... practice makes perfect.

More About This Tutor...

I really like to tailor my style to each student. I also believe that when it comes to math, students often need as much help getting over their fear of math as they do with the actual concepts. I have had good experience designing science experiments and hands-on projects to help demonstrate science concepts and bring these concepts to life. I was fortunate enough to have excellent role models and caring teachers throughout my childhood and would like to pass on the attention that was shown to me.
I have earned a bachelor's degree from one of the most well regarded institutions in the world and I have a solid math and science background. For two summers while an undergrad, I taught an engineering course to high school juniors participating in the YESS (Young Engineers and Science Scholars) program. I also tutored a junior high school boy for two years in all subjects. I've tutore ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Teaching is an art form that involves love, patience and understanding. Each student learns differently and requires different teaching styles. I have had students that need help being focused and I have had students who need to relax to open up the brain waves to learning. My teaching style includes evaluating each students strengths and weaknesses so that I can focus in the correct areas for each.
As a high school student, my first job was at Kumon Math and Reading Center where I helped tutor Math students for 2 years. Once in college, my tutoring experiences were limited to summers but was able to help one student pass her summer school math class so that she could graduate. In the last 5 years I have helped many students improve their grades as well as helping a student with cancer complete all of her coursework while she was out during treatment. A Little Bit About Me...

Over the course of my twenty-three years I have received an international education by way of inter-continental travel and attendance to a world-class university. I have spent much time in the volunteer and non-profit sectors, both donating my time to various kinds of community aid as well as researching aspects of those communities. Because of the broad spectrum of my educational experience, I have spent much time in various areas of study including: natural & Chinese medicine, anatomy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, dance, writing, photography and studio art. I have tutored students in English, writing, mathematics, sciences, dance and photography.
Having taught college English in rural China, I have found that I am extremely adaptable in my teaching style. I have the ability to precisely coordinate my teaching techniques with the background and needs of the student in orde ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in Psychology, MS in Zoology and BS in Computer Science. I have lifetime Arizona Community College certification in psychology, biology, ecology and remedial math. My experience with special populations includes: three years full-time on the Navajo Reservation; three years part-time at the SALT Center at the University of Arizona working with learning disabled students; and a hands-on nature camp for deaf middle-schoolers. My favorite experience has been the opportunity to design the curriculum, code the programs, and teach the student counselors for the U of A's Computer Science week-long summer enrichment program for teens.
My forte is science and math, which are often students' least favorite subjects, due to earlier difficulty. A solid basic understanding of these subjects is critical to being an independent, engaged adult; and it's just plain cool to understand ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In college I was able to tutor children in reading and math at Tucson Metropolitan Ministries. After I received my bachelor's degree in ecology and evolutionary biology (minoring in science education), I wanted to teach youth in an alternative setting. I taught for six months at Lutheran, Retreats, Camps and Conferences in California. I gained experience in hands-on teaching styles and how to provide concrete examples for abstract ideas. This past three months I have been substituting with Tucson Unified School District. This experience helps me to see a wide variety of teaching styles and classroom management techniques. I am also a Director of Youth Ministries at Desert Skies United Methodist Church, where I get to interact and teach youth and where I am also able to provide them with healthy activites outside of school.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had experience teaching that is inquiry-based but have also taught in a more factual style with lecture. I believe that each student has a different style of learning, and I am more than willing to adapt to the child. It is crucial for students to understand all the fundamentals of education, so that higher levels (college) of education will be obtained. I always make sure the student understands the material every step of the way so that they will not fall behind. I also believe that the student must take what they learn and apply it. I also believe that by excelling in certain areas of school and improving, this will give a higher confidence to the students that will be apparent in all areas of school.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been both a teacher, substitute for elementary and full-time for middle school, along with having a career in the accounting and bookkeeping venues. I enjoy people and thrive on their successes. One of my lifetime desires is to not only following thru on the beginning steps, debits and credits, but to help people start a pretend company. My expertise is also with working with diverse groups of people. I have taught juvenile delinquents, and up to 60 different ethnic groups. I have a full degree in Elementary Education, and extended courses for accounting with accreditation for sitting for the EA (enrolled agent) exam this year showing my proficiency for taxes--individual.

A Little Bit About Me...

While studying Physics at Iowa State University, I first discovered my love for teaching and tutoring and have been doing it almost continuously since then. I worked for the ISU Academic Success Center helping groups of 1-4 students learn calculus and calculus-based physics for 3 semesters. They always left my sessions understanding the subject better and gave me the highest reviews possible. Later, after briefly attending grad school, I went to Mexico and taught for a year. In my time there, I worked at both a private language school and as a 9th grade teacher at a private school. During this time, I learned a great deal about the English language as well as how to run a small class. Since returning to the US, I have also tutored my cousins in Spanish and ACT preparation. I now feel very comfortable tutoring for math and science as well as English, Spanish, and test preparation.< ... read more

I have the ability to model concepts by providing students specific examples. I believe that everyone has the ability to do mathematics. A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate student at the University of Chicago, I was responsible for leading introductory core Biology labs, which covered an array of concepts in biology, statistics, computer usage, and experimental design. Because lab reports were frequent requirements, I also was able to improve skills as a writing tutor I had already developed as a writing tutor (paid student position) in the Writing Lab at Towson University. I also have taught a remedial study- and life-skills course for students on Academic Probation at the University of Arizona. Finally, in my capacity as Academic Advising Coordinator at the University of Arizona, I interacted in a one-on-one capacity with students to develop their intellectual, academic, and career interests.

More About This Tutor...

My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.
I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom. After gaining my teaching certification with my MS, I taught history and geography in Alabama. After my Latin American Studies MA. I taught Latin, Greek, and Spanish. My tutoring was for middle and high school students in these and other fields, and I am currently a tutor for the University of Arizona's SALT Center, a program whic ... read more

More About This Tutor...

One of my many passions in life is working with kids, specifically tutoring them. I have found that it is easier to tutor a student when they know that they are surrounded by positivity. With this I am referring to the feeling of comfort and knowing that it's ok to be wrong. I notice more confidence in my students when I establish a friendship with them. In addition to this, letting my students know that even at different ages, we can still relate to one another. I love incorporating visual images, tangible objects, color, laughter, and fun in my tutoring sessions. I strongly believe that repetition is important when learning something new. I have found that every students learning style is different and I have been able to easily adjust to this.
